Isle of Wight has a terrain rating of 3.2/5. The Isle of Wight has a split personality. The seafront towns (Sandown, Shanklin, Ryde, Cowes) are largely flat along the promenades. The interior and south coast are hilly chalk downland and often inaccessible for limited mobility. The island is connected to the mainland by ferry from Southampton (Red Funnel), Lymington (Wightlink), Portsmouth (Wightlink), or Southsea (Hovertravel). The flat coastal towns are excellent. The countryside is not. Flat/accessible areas include: Sandown seafront and esplanade are completely flat, excellent. Shanklin seafront is flat, but the Old Village is situated on a hill above the coast. Ryde Esplanade and pier are flat. Cowes High Street and waterfront are flat. Newport town centre (the island capital) is flat. Yarmouth (smallest town on the island) has a lovely flat waterfront.
Isle of Wight scores 3.0/5 for stamina requirements on GoTripAble. It may require careful planning for travellers with chronic fatigue or ME/CFS. Seating info: Extensive benches along all the seafront esplanades. Good seating in town centres. Sandown Esplanade has excellent seating provision.
Isle of Wight has a toilet access rating of 3.5/5. All-terrain wheelchairs available on Sandown seafront (free hire). Accessible toilets at all seafront towns. Changing Places toilet at Ryde and Newport. Generally reasonable provision.
Isle of Wight has a heat/climate rating of 4.2/5. One of the warmest parts of England. July-August averages 20-22°C. Sea breezes from the Solent keep the coastal towns pleasant. More heat risk than most UK destinations. The seafront is usually breezy and manageable even in warm spells.
